With Plastic Manufacturer Amcor, Campbell Soup Co. Opens New On-Site Bottle Factory

In an effort to improve efficiency, cut freight cost, and reduce their carbon emissions, Campbell Soup Co. has opened an on-site plastic production and bottling facility. The food and beverage maker will be creating its own PET containers from its Paris, Texas production facility with Amcor Rigid Plastics. Will it be a beneficial move for both companies? Image Source: Plastics News A New Factory Space With Shipping Savings By moving bottle-making to their Paris plant, Campbell is avoiding a yearly cost of shipping 2,000 truckloads of bottles from Amcor Rigid Plastics’ Fort Worth manufacturing facility. The new bottle-making plant cost Amcor $7 million to create and was established in a existing 6,000 square feet of space. The new factory was repurposed to accommodate the blow molding process used to make Campbell’s plastic bottles. Production will be devoted to 46 and 64-ounce hot-fill PET containers that are filled with Campbell’s V8 brand of beverages. The new manufacturing capabilities will allow for the production of 50 million bottles a year—a significant supplement to the yearly 150 million bottles that Amcor makes at Campbell’s Napoleon, Ohio beverage plant. Image Source: Wikimedia Improvements Toward Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing In addition to saving Campbell Soup Co. shipping costs and strengthening their partnership with Amcor Rigid Plastic, the change will amount to some considerable improvements towards more environmentally conscious manufacturing. Keeping freights of bottles off the road is expected to save 376 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, an estimated equivalent of saving 900,000 passenger vehicle miles from the road annually. Campbell Soup Co. is working on other container changes for its V8 brand. The company is currently trying to transition to BPA-free lined cans for its varieties of V8 juice, but has run into obstacles due to the scale of the transition, technical issues, and overall cost.
