Selecting the Right Electric Motor

How to Make an Electric Motor Last Longer?

To make an electric motor last longer, there are a number of things you can do to prevent it from failing prematurely. First, you want to make sure the motor can run efficiently and as intended. That means selecting the right electric motor according to your application demands and eliminating as many harmful factors as possible.

Make sure to evaluate the motor’s environment. Settings that are subject to extreme hot or cold, high humidity or moisture can contribute to motor failure over time. Floating particles like dust, or even chemical corrosion can quickly interfere with motor components and mechanisms, and compromise a motor’s ability to run the way it should.

Be sure to check for improper lubrication. If not carefully controlled, grease can cause damage and introduce contaminants into the motor’s bearings. If grease is mixed with a base, sometimes the lubricant can separate and cause the bearings to dry out.

Putting excessive load on the motor can create a dynamic imbalance or cause coupling to mis-align. When a motor is forced to draw more current than it was designed for, it can overheat and its operation life will be dramatically reduced. To prevent this, make sure your motor’s load specs are appropriate for your application demands.
