How to Choose an Industrial Electric Motor: Important Parameters

The first factor to consider is the power source or voltage that’s necessary for your application. Do you require alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC)? There are universal motors that can run on both, but unless you need dual functionally, you should identify your specific voltage need.

Consider then how you will need the industrial motor to run. Will you need a high starting torque, velocity control, high speed, low vibration, or incremental operation? Apart from voltage, motors are categorized based on their operation.

Types of AC motors include single-phase induction motors, three-phase induction motors, two-phase servo motors, and hysteresis synchronous motors.

Types of DC motors include brushless DC motors, brush DC motors, and stepper motors.

Each type of electric motor provides it’s own unique advantages and limitations, so if you’re unsure of which to choose, it’s best to contact a manufacturer or supplier directly to discuss your application specs.
